A Macon swimmer and his coach have achieved a big honor this summer. Both will head out Monday to the Southern Zone Swimming Championships.
Marco Leo is the Georgia State Champion in the 200 breast stroke. Justin Correia's been working with him because both are part of Swim Macon.
Correia says this is the epidemy for a swimmer and a coach to get an invite to this meet. It's really a stepping stone to the Olympics down the road because swimmers have to leave thier home teams, travel and gel with other kids.
Marco thinks he'll have to change his game plan to be succesful at the next level. "I think I have to use another strategy this time try not to get back so far like in the beginning I don't want to get back too much that I can't catch up again," Marco said.
Correia says Marco is also coming in a bit younger than the kids he will jump off the blocks against. "Well he's going to be going against older kids down there, he just turned 12, so lot of the swimmers from especially Florida are 12 and close to 13 and a lot bigger than him," Correia said.
Marco and the other Georgia swimmers will leave Monday from the Macon Mall. Correia says Florida usually wins this meet with Georgia coming in second. We'll keep you updated on Georgia's progress and let you know how Marco's doing throughout the week.
