TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Kevin Hallaran didn't get swallowed by a whale, but by something a lot smellier -- a garbage truck.

Authorities in Tampa, Fla., report the 52-year-old fell asleep in a Dumpster behind a restaurant. He was picked up along with the trash by a garbage truck early yesterday morning.

He was banging on the inside of the garbage truck and yelling for help when firefighters and paramedics arrived.

Fortunately for Hallaran, the sanitation worker hadn't yet hit the compactor switch. Hallaran just has minor injuries. But authorities say he could have been killed if the garbage had been compressed inside the truck.
