WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Georgia judge nominated by President Barack Obama to sit on the federal appeals court in Atlanta is getting support from key Republican senators despite some criticism over her decision to shorten a sentence in a child sex abuse case last year.
U.S. District Court Judge Beverly Martin would serve on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, which hears federal appeals from Georgia, Alabama and Florida. Georgia's two Republican senators, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson, voiced strong support for her at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday.
Two other Republicans questioned her decision to reduce a 30-year sentence against a man convicted of crossing state lines with plans to have sex with a child. But they said they liked her overall record and were inclined to support her nomination.
