The U.S. Department of Justice has appointed a Mercer University School of Law graduate as acting successor to Max Wood.

Wood announced his retirement in June.

G.F. "Pete" Peterman, III will be Acting U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia effective 12:01 a.m. Saturday. It'll be Peterman's second appointment as acting attorney.

He also served in the post in 2000 and 2001, before President George W. Bush appointed Wood.

Peterman has worked with the U.S. Attorney's office since May 1990 as a Criminal Assistant United States Attorney.

He was appointed as Criminal Division Chief in September 1996 and First Assistant United States Attorney in June 1998.

"I am confident Pete will serve the Middle District of Georgia very well," Wood said.
