A group of future doctors took the next step in their education Saturday, as first year Mercer med students received their official white coats.

The Mercer University Medical School welcomed 61 students into their program with a white coat ceremony at the Grand Opera House in Macon.

Students say they are excited to receive the symbolic piece of clothing and get started in the medical field.

However, they say the national spotlight on the health care debate could impact their role as physicians in the future.

Student Mallory Bates says, "I think that if we do have a government run system we should let the doctors stay in control of prescribing medicine or the tests they can perform, because as a physician we know better than the government how to treat our patients. But I think that everyone should have health care."

Mercer's med students begin classes on Monday.
