COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) -- The city of Columbus has been denied $5.5 million in federal stimulus funds for the new NCR Corporation plant scheduled to open in October.

Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce official Becca Hardin said Saturday that the Development Authority of Columbus was told the application for the money was not approved.

Columbus could have covered up to $7.4 million in debt as part of the city's plan to facilitate the expansion project.

The denial won't impact NCR's decision to locate the facility in Columbus where it will manufacture ATMs. The company has already hired about 50 people and is holding training classes in the building while it is being renovated.

The plant will bring about 870 new jobs to Columbus.
