Mercer University first-year students left the nest and moved in to their dorms to prepare for their first year at college Saturday.

Family and friends of about 600 freshmen pulled up to helping hands at the school.

Many of the upper-classmen returned to campus Friday, and helped out with the moving process. Members of student organizations and some staff carried helped the new students out by carrying their things to their rooms while the new students filled out forms.

"The move in crew was very nice instead of me having to lug everything in," said freshman Katie Miller.

Workers say they wanted the process to run as smoothly as possible to help new students adjust more quickly to the campus.

"It's really weird cause for 18 years of our lives we've been with our parents no we're on our own, but it's just a good sense of independence just the next step in our lives," said freshman Morgan Robinson.

Mercer students start classes on Tuesday.
