Home and business owners in Byron could save more money, thanks to the new classification of their fire department.
The Insurance Services Office, or ISO, has improved the Byron Fire Department's fire protection rating, after the station sat at the same level for 25 years. The station went from a seven to a five out of a possible ten. The improvement in the Public Protection Classification places Byron in the top 30 percent of rated fire districts in the nation.
Local insurers say the average Byron homeowner may see a savings of anywhere from three to 12 percent in their homeowners insurance. Fire Chief J.D. Mosby says they worked for years to get everything in place for the ISO to inspect the station.
"They look at your response procedures, personnel, staffing. They look really hard at the training records to make sure that they're up to date and up to par with standards," said Mosby.
The new rating becomes effective December 1st.
