The conditions weren't ideal, but the result was. A soggy soccer field became downright sloppy as rain poured down late in Mercer's home matchup with Georgia Southern.
The Eagles (0-5-1) took the Bears to sudden-death overtime. That's when Ian Cameron broke free to seal Mercer's (1-3-2) first win of the year.
Cameron got the Bears on the scoreboard in the 20th minute with a low shot off a pretty spin move past Southern keeper Mike Gubosh.
The score remained 1-0 in Mercer's favor until the 75th minute. Georgia Southern was rewarded a free kick. Matt Crowell took the pass through the teeth of the defense and unleashed a lazer past Brett Petricek.
Crowell's strike sent the match into overtime. Cameron took a beautiful delivery from Chrispine Ong'Ango and fired Gubosh, ending the game 7:04 into overtime.
Sunday's game was a non-conference matchup, but the Peach state rivalry showed in the physical, testy manner of play. Five yellow cards and one red card were handed out.
The Bears face Appalachian State, another Southern Conference foe on September 25th. They'll travel to Belmont to open Atlantic Sun play on October 1st.
