People in Twiggs County will celebrate a big milestone this year. The county turns 200 years old on December 14th.
The county is getting a head start on the fun with Saturday's Pioneer Days Festival. The event starts at 9 a.m. and will be held at Hendricks Park in Jeffersonville.
According to the event's planners, homemade quilts will be sold at the festival. In addition to arts and crafts, there will be food from local vendors, an antique car show, and a fishing contest for kids.
Local groups will provide live entertainment throughout the day, culminating with a performance by Twiggs County's own Chuck Leavell, a member of the Rolling Stones.
I'm excited about the quilting," Twiggs County's Jacqueline Coley said.
Members of the bicentennial committee, which planned the festival, hope the event showcases the county's history.
"That's the one thing we're really trying to promote," committee member Merle Arnold said, "our history."
The county first signed its charter agreement on Decemeber 14, 1809, according to committee member Donald Floyd.
Saturday's event is the first of many leading up to the December birthday.
The committee plans to re-enact the signing of the charter, dressed in period clothing, on December 13, Floyd said.
He urged all folks, not just residents of Twiggs County, to attend the festival.
"Don't be disappointed later because you didn't come," Floyd said.
Tickets to Saturday's festival can be purchased in advance for $4, and that includes a commemorative pin. Tickets can also be purchased at the gate. Prices are $5 for adults, $3 for students, and kids under 12 get in free.
