Hancock County authorities say a Wrightsville man died in Wednesday's construction accident at a church.

Timothy Dixon, age 32, died when parts of a new roof collapsed at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, said Ricky Brown, an investigator at the Hancock County Sheriff's Office.

Three other men were taken to local hospitals, Brown said.

They are:

  • James Hines, age 36, of Wrightsville;
  • Edward Lawrence of Hancock County;
  • Bobby Chapman, age 45, of Crawfordville.

Hines and Lawrence were taken to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta; Chapman to the Oconee Regional Medical Center.

Brown said Hines Construction Co. of Wrightsville was putting new rafters in place for the church, which was destroyed in February by a tornado.

Brad Mitchell, a spokesman for the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said the agency didn't know about the fatal accident until 13WMAZ called to ask about its investigation. He said the contractor did not notify them of the accident.

Hines Construction could not be reached for comment.

James Baker, a church member who lives next door, says he heard the accident from his front porch.

"I just heard that noise, that something was about to fall and then in a few minutes it went down, but like I said at that time I didn't know all that tragedy had happened," said Baker.
