Monroe Co. Expanding Water System

Laurie Rogers says having well water damages many of the appliances in her home. The hard water leaves deposits in her washing machine and she even had to buy a new sink because of the stains, not to mention the taste.

"I just don't like the taste of well water," she said.

She lives in Heritage Farms subdivision, near Bolingbroke. She and about 70 other people in her area will soon get county water, as well as about 35 homes in the northern part and about 60 in the southwest area of the county.

"It definitely will be cheaper than the well. We'll have a monthly payment where we don't with the well, but a well does need a lot of repairs and the down payment you put on a well is much greater," she said.

The Rogers built their home about four years ago, but other families in the neighborhood have used well water for decades. The issue of bringing county water to more homes is a hot issue, but Commissioner Mike Bilderback says these things take time. A penny sales tax from the years 2008 to 2014 will fund this part of the water expansion project.

"Every time that cycle rolls around we bond money to make improvements to the water system, so that's why this is being done now," said Bilderback.

Rogers hopes county water flows through her pipes as soon as possible, so her appliances stay in better shape and she can stop sending money down the drain.

The new customers will be added to the existing 2,200 already getting county water.

The commission voted to hire John R. Walker out of Macon to lay the water lines in the three areas. It will take the company about four months to complete each area, beginning in Bolingbroke.

The total cost of the project is about $1.2 million.
