ATLANTA (AP) -- Souther Field Airport, a former military training base, is set to be renamed Jimmy Carter Regional Airport in honor of the former president.
Carter plans to attend the Sunday renaming ceremony at the airport, about 20 miles from his native Plains.
The Americus City Council, Sumter County Board of Commissioners and the Americus and Sumter County Airport Authority all voted to approve the change.
But not everyone's happy about it. Opponents say they have no problem with Carter and would be happy to see something else named after the 39th president. But they want to preserve the history of the airfield, which is named after Henry Souther, who helped develop the airfield as a military training base during World War I.
