He is a man whose personality can fill a college arena. Dick Vitale is the voice of college basketball and has been such since he went on the airwaves for ESPN's first college basketball broadcast.
On Monday afternoon Vitale was Mercer basketball's biggest supporter.
The former coach and longtime analyst was on campus to help build buzz for the upcoming college basketball season. The Mercer Athletic Foundation brought him to speak at events in Atlanta and Macon.
Dickie V spoke to local media about Mercer's men's and women's programs, his own experiences as a coach and analyst, how he met his wife, and how much he loves underdogs in mid-major college hoops.
Mercer held a pep rally prior to Monday's banquet in the University Center.
The visit falls in line with the start of basketball practice for the Mercer men and women later in the week. Both teams begin the season on November 5th with a doubleheader against GCSU. The women tip off the action at 5:00 p.m.
