If you don't pay your garbage collection fee in Macon and Bibb County, you could lose your home.
Bibb County Tax Commissioner Thomas Tedders says when a garbage collection fee goes unpaid, he issues a lien against the home. Now, he says he's stepping up enforcement.
"Yes, some of them may come to me and say, hey this is harsh, you're selling my house for a $45 a quarter garbage bill," Tedders said Thurday. "Yes I am, because the law says I have to if you don't pay it."
Tedders says six homes belonging to people who didn't pay up were sold on the Bibb County Courthouse steps this month. And he says, about another 380 properties are scheduled for sale in December, unless what's owed is paid.
According to Tedders, on average, a propery with a lien on it owes between $700 - $800 in garbage fees and penalties.
Tedders says if you are having financial troubles, you can apply for a hardship waiver.
