While the kids are deciding whether to be a pretty princess or a scary skeleton, the Macon Police Department says there are a few safety tips Middle Georgia Moms should know:
1. Make sure your kids are prepared for trick-or-treating in the dark.
"A flashlight, anything reflective, that's always a great asset to them while they're out trick-or-treating," Macon Police Department's Sergeant Raymond Reynolds said.
2. Try to pick a light-colored costume.
Sgt. Reynolds says this will help ensure your child is visible to drivers at night. But, if your child insists on a dark-colored costume, he says there are ways to make them more visible.
"They have reflective tape that they can put on the costume to make it safer," Sgt. Reynolds said.
3. Choose makeup - rather than a mask - to compliment your child's costume.
"We recommend makeup," Sgt. Reynolds said, "because makeup is on their face and it won't obscure their vision."
4. Consider using hypoallergenic cosmetics.
Balloon and Parties costume store owner Jerry Bradley says it lessens the possibility of a break out.
"Some people are more sensitive than others," Bradley said.
5. Cut the eye sockets out of your child's mask.
If makeup just won't do, Bradley says you can make it safer by cutting the eye sockets, to make them bigger, or remove material that could hinder their vision.
6. Avoid wool fabrics and sparkles.
Sgt. Reynolds says these materials can be flammable.
7. Try it on before you buy.
"Bring the children in," Bradley said, "because we want them to try the costume on, because it's very essential that the costume fit right."
Sgt. Reynolds agrees, adding that a good fit may prevent your child from tripping and falling, and coming home with bruises.
Most importantly, have fun with your kids on the spookiest night of the year!
