The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Americus office is investigating a feticide.
Special Agent in Charge Trebor Randle says a feticide is when an unborn child is killed during a felony crime.
She says a pregnant woman was shot once in her abdomen Thursday around 5:30 a.m. at a house just off of Shiloh Church Road in Montezuma.
She says investigators believe that someone fired shots from outside of the home.
She says it is not yet clear if the pregnant woman was the target.
Randle says the mother survived the gunshot wound, but the fetus died.
Randle says the fetus was at least six months gestation.
After being wounded, the mother was taken to a Macon County hospital, then later transported the the Medical Center of Central Georgia where the fetus was declared deceased.
Randle says it was taken to the crime lab for an autopsy. They are not yet releasing the victim's identity.
The GBI is asking for the public's help in solving the case. Anyone with any information is asked to call the GBI Americus office at 229-931-2439.
Randle says there could possibly be compensation for any information leading to an arrest.
