A volunteer firefighter in Hancock County died of an apparent heart attack last weekend during a rescue call.

Gary Street was 60 years old and an information-technology representative at Georgia Military College, according to James McClure, chief of the East Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

He says Street was the first volunteer to respond to an emergency call Saturday for a woman who fell out of the tree.

After other volunteers arrived to aid the woman, McClure said, Street walked away to move his truck and collapsed. Other firefighters performed CPR, but he died, the chief said.

Street had lived in the county for about six years and worked with the department for about two and a half years.

"He was a great firefighter and great person," said McClure. "Everyone loved him."

Street will receive a full firefighter funeral Friday, starting at 11 a.m. at the Williams Funeral Home at 1670 North Jefferson Street, Milledgeville. A fire department procession will travel to the Georgia Veterans Cemetery for burial.
