A man walked away from the accident after his tractor was hit by a train going about 50 mph.

Susan Terpay, a spokesperson for Norfolk Southern Railroad, said it happened about 11:30 a.m. Thursday at a private crossing near Fort Valley off Highway 49.

David Lane of Lane Southern Orchards sent us pictures of the wreck, which he said happened off Old Macon Road and Sylvan Dell Road.

He said the man worked for Malcolm Giles Farm and was driving a John Deere tractor.

The impact from the train cut the tractor in half, with the front section landing about 50 feet away, he said.

Lane said the man didn't appear to be injured.

He said the train was traveling around 50 mph. Terpay did not confirm that, but said the normal speed limit for trains in the area is 49 mph.

The Peach County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia State Patrol did not return our phone calls about the accident.
