A college student from Dublin will carry the Olympic torch next year in Canada.

Sponsor Coca Cola selected Crystal Hardy, sophomore from Georgia Southern University, because of her volunteer work, according to a Georgia Southern news release.

She will carry the torch in Calgary, Canada on Jan. 18, as it makes its way to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Games, the college says.

According to Georgia Southern, Hardy is an American Sign Language/Interpretation major.

Hardy co-founded the Laurens County Green Teens in Dublin, which is active in recycling and environmental efforts at Georgia Southern.

Her work with the Laurens County teen group led to a bottle-recycling program at area schools, and money raised from the recycling went back to schools in Dublin and Laurens County.

She organized a volunteer project in which more 150 people tore down an old playground and re-built a new one at a Laurens County shelter for abused women and their children.

At Georgia Southern, among other projects, Hardy volunteers during Georgia Southern home football games to collect items for recycling that might normally be thrown away after tailgating, the school says.
