Gloria Besley from Lizella wrote to us and asked, "What happened to the Medi-Thin weight loss center on Forsyth Road? They say they've closed, but I didn't get any warning and now I can't get a hold of anyone with the program."
Besley joined Medi-Thin this past March.
"My weight was out of control and I just didn't really feel good," she said.
The program helped her go from a size 16 to a size 12.
"I can now wear the clothes that I wore in my 30's and I'm 64."
She paid $1,600 to join the program, plus money for food and a monthly fee. They guaranteed her life-time support, but Monday, instead of friendly faces, a sign greeted her at the door. It said the program had closed because they lost their lease.
"I guess I'm one of the few people who really got upset, not so much because the program closed, but that it was working for me," she said.
She tried getting a hold of someone with the program, but but the phones were disconnected. Now she's worried about the pounds she has left to lose, but also the money she may lose for products she paid for in advance.
"I would like for someone to contact me and at least allow me to get the supplies I've already paid for," she said.
She hopes to find another way to continue to lose weight and get some of her money back.
We tried to contact Guy Eberhardt, who's listed as Medi-Thin's agent on its registration with the Georgia Secretary of State's Office. He didn't return our calls.
Shawn Conroy with the Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs says it's not against the law for them to go out of business, but he's concerned their website is still up and advertising the program is "guaranteed for life."
He says Gloria and other members have a few options:
You can file a claim with magistrate court.
If you bought an extended membership or ordered supplies on a credit card in advance, you can ask your credit card company for a charge back.
You can also file a claim with the Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs at 1-800-869-1123 and contact the Better Business Bureau at (478) 742-7999.
