After closing its doors this past summer, Monroe Academy in Forsyth has a new chance at life, offering classes once more.
According to a release from the school district, Central Georgia Technical College and Macon State College will begin offering courses at the building starting January, 2010, as a joint venture with the Monroe County Board of Education and the Development Authority of Monroe County.
According to assistant superintendent Jackson Daniel, the Monroe County Board of Education bought the 24-acre campus last week. Daniel says they bought the property for $2.415 million, and it will be financed through the Georgia School Board Association.
The release said, the board will continue to explore future possibilities for the use of the campus for pre-K through 12 educational opportunities. The board said they hope members of the community will enroll in courses offered by CGTC and MSC.
Monroe Academy closed in August, because of low enrollment and lack of funds.
The Forsyth-Monroe County Chamber of Commerce and Development Authority of Monroe County will host a college fair on Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and again from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Alderman Hall at 5 West Adams Street in Forsyth. The event will provide Monroe County citizens an opportunity to talk with representatives from CGTC and MSC.
