Kayla Segars can't resist sinking
her teeth into a chocolate covered bar of sweetness, even if her mom says it'll
make her break out.
"Every time I have a piece of
chocolate in my mouth," Segars says that's how often her mom reminds her
of the perils of the candy.
So, to keep her skin glowing, she scrubs
her face every morning and again before she hits the sack, but her chocolate
intake gave her something to worry about.
"I was very conscious of how I
ate chocolate, just cause of my face," said Segars, but now she can put that
fear behind her and get back to enjoying chocolate treats.
Dermatologist Dr. Jennifer Allen
says she has nothing to worry about.
"It is a myth that chocolate
causes acne. It's really been disproven now," said Allen.
She says acne is created by pores
clogged with oil, hair follicles and bacteria, not the sugary goodies you eat.
"I tell patients if you put
chocolate on your face and clog your pores that might cause acne, but if you eat
it, it really should not," she said.
"Having clear skin just makes you
feel better about yourself," said Segars and having a tasty treat to
please her sweet tooth, makes it even better.
Allen says if you heard about other
foods like pizza and french-fries causing acne, you don't have to worry about
that either. Now if you have serious
concerns that something you ate broke you out, Allen says give it a break for
about 4 to 6 weeks. If that doesn't help
she says you should see a doctor.
