A Washington County High School student went through surgery today after allegedly being attacked by three other girls in school.
The mother of Jessica Kirkland says her daughter went through three hours of brain surgery to remove a tumor that was loosened as a result of Monday's fight.
When doctors examined her at the Washington County Regional Medical Center, they found that the floating tumor and sent her to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, she said.
Her grandmother, Frances Page, says the fight started Monday when Jessica accidentally bumped into another girl. She says Jessica apologized.
"All together there were three girls. They jumped on her. Kicked her. Pulled her hair. And beat her all in the head," says Page. "Seemed like nobody cared enough to stop it," she said.
Page says the incident helped find the tumor, but she says doctors say it could have turned out differently.
"They could have hit her in the wrong place. They could have hit her in the back of the head and she could have died instantly," says Page.
Jessica's mother Tracy Kirkland says her daughter may stay in the hospital until Tuesday.
She says her daughter will most likely be out of school for the rest of the year.
Contacted earlier this week, principal Al Gray confirmed there was a fight but said nobody had been arrested and that nobody was hospitalized as a result of the fight. He declined to discuss the fight further.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office and Sandersville police referred questions to Gray.
Today, Gray declined comment.
With Jessica on the mend, Page says she's wondering why more isn't being done to punish the alledged attackers. Jessica's parents say school officials said the three girls were suspended and sent to the Youth Detention Center.
"We're afraid. We are afraid that nothing will be done. And they'll finally let these girls out again to do something to someone else," says Page.
Washington school Supt. Donna Hinton did not return phone calls from 13WMAZ.
