After six months of searching, Jack Gresham says he and his family finally found the playful pup they always wanted. It just took them more than 6 hours of driving to get to him.
"Westies go quick so we didn't want to fool around," Gresham said. "We got up at 3:00 a.m."
The Tampa native found the Warner Robins animal shelter's Westie by searching online. They drove to the shelter Friday to pick up the pup. Gresham says he was impressed with the new facility.
"I've been very impressed, everybody is real friendly," Gresham said.
Director Brenda Parks-Mathern says the new building is helping them appeal to families looking for the perfect pet.
But at a meeting this month, Warner Robins Mayor John Havrilla recognized the site was built too small.
"Council has already set up a project account and we're also in the process of finalizing negotiations with the appropriate architectural personnel in order to be able to replicate the plans we already have," Havrilla said.
He says council is moving forward to fix the problem. There aren't enough pens for animals from Warner Robins, Houston County and Centerville animal control, though Centerville and Houston County paid their share of the shelter's cost.
Houston County Animal Control Director Dale Newberry says the mistake hasn't caused any problems. And most seem to agree, with folks like Gresham traveling to Warner Robins for the shelter's furry friends, the new building is getting the job done.
