A bridge in Warner Robins could be unsafe for school buses and other heavy vehicles to drive across.
City Public Works Director Joe Musselwhite asked council to approve spending to build a new bridge on Kimberly Road.
Musselwhite said recent heavy rains put added stress on the 50-year-old bridge. It's in a drainage area across from Fountain Park in a heavily traveled area.
Council approved the project that's expected to cost about $261,000. The money will come from the stormwater utility fund.
Musselwhite says construction will take about five weeks, and will start once school is out for the summer.
Council plans to notify the school board and other businesses with heavy vehicles about the possible safety problem with the bridge.
Mayor John Havrilla says they'll ask drivers of those vehicles to avoid the bridge. He said, "Out of an abundance of caution, we would not want anything disastrous to happen. So at this time, he feels it's prudent that we take some money and improve that bridge."
Musselwhite said the new bridge will be able to handle twice the amount of water as the current bridge. It will also be wider and have sidewalks with guardrails, because of its location across from Fountain Park.
