A portion of Perry's "Go Fish Georgia" attraction will be put on hold, because the state doesn't have enough money to complete construction.
Project manager with the Department of Natural Resources John Biage says they need more corporate sponsorships to complete the $23 million project.
Regional DNR Fisheries Manager Ted Will says they completed the first phase of construction, with plans to begin the second this week.
The first phase included the building, hatchery and fishing ponds. The second phase will include construction of interactive exhibits.
Will says they're on schedule to open the attraction this time next year, but because of a lack of money, that likely won't include phase three. That portion included ponds for raising fish that aren't commonly found in Georgia's water ways. It is slated to cost about $5 million.
Despite the set-back, Will says the site will promote Georgia's $2 billion fishing industry.
Will said, "We all know fishing is big fun, but fishing is also big business. This facility helps in both of those areas."
State and corporate sponsorships paid for the majority of the project. Houston County, the City of Perry and the Houston County Development Authority contributed a combined $2.5 million.
