Milledgeville's Oconee Regional Medical Center is restricting visits by children to prevent the spread of flu.

According to a news release, the new policy starts Tuesday, Dec. 1 and will continue through the flu season or until further notice.

They say the goal is to reduce patients' exposure to both the H1N1 and seasonal influenza viruses. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the hospital says, children under 17 are more likely to catch and spread the flu.

The police affects the hospital's Obstetrics Unit, Sleep and Wellness Center, Wound Healing Center, and Cancer Treatment Center and also Jasper Memorial Hospital in Monticello.

The hospital is asking children to avoid visits to the hospital, but the policy does not affect patients under 17.

Oconee Regional is joining the Medical Center of Central Georgia and Coliseum Medical Center in Macon, Houston Medical Center and other Central Georgia hospitals that are asking children to stay away during the flu season.
