The Community Foundation of Central Georgia announced grants for 24 projects to improve Macon's College Hill neighborhood Monday.
The recipients were selected from a group of 47 applicants, totaling more that $3.1 million in requests, to the Knight Neighborhood Challenge. The challenge invests in projects and ideas that revitalize and improve the neighborhood.
The Beall's Hill Community Garden was awarded $2,800, which co-founder Mark Vanderhoek says it will use for spring planting and developing a master plan for the garden.
Harry Eskew volunteers at the organic garden once a week, checking on the garlic, basil and other food growing there. He wants to see the garden expand.
"I think its great because we've got the land and now we can expand," Eskew said.
Julia Wood, of the Community Foundation of Central Georgia, announced the grant recipients Monday. She says the group was overwhelmed by the response of the community and diversity of ideas brought forth.
"It really is people who want to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty and make a difference in the community," Wood said.
See below for a complete list of recipients.
If you have a creative idea for College Hill, you can apply for grants to make it happen. The deadline for the next round of applications is February 15.
