OSHA cited Callaway Farms Manufacturing in Wilkes County for 20 serious violations after investigating an injury where an employee slipped and fell into machinery.
The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Andy Bowers, general
manager and CEO at Callaway Farms, says the worker climbed into a machine and was violating company guidelines.
OSHA spokesman Michael Wald said workers at the plant, which grinds logs into shavings, operated machines without guards and were not required to wear protective footwear.
Bowers says the worker climbed over two safety barriers and tried to unjam the shaver.
