NAACP Wants Stay of Execution for Carlton Gary

The Georgia NAACP has endorsed efforts to win a stay of Wednesday's scheduled execution for Carlton Gary.

Gary's attorneys are seeking a stay for Gary asking that the
courts allow time for DNA testing of evidence in the "stocking
strangling" cases in Columbus in the late 1970s.

The Georgia Conference of the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People has asked Muscogee County District Attorney Julia Slater to drop her opposition to Gary's
stay.

Gary was convicted in three of the seven stocking stranglings.

His execution is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at the state Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson, Ga.

If a stay is denied, the NAACP plans a prayer vigil at 6 p.m.
Wednesday.
