Dozens lined up outside United Methodist Church, located off First Street in Macon, Thursday morning.

Macon Outreach continued their long-time tradition of serving meals to those in need. Throughout the year, they serve meals Monday through Friday to the public.

Executive Director Johnny Hathcock says there has been an increase in the number of people they serve.

He says last year, they served about 47,000 people. This year, the number reached more than 53,000 people. That's up 12-percent.

While the economy may be a key factor, Hathcock says another reason for the increase is that more people are willing to travel through different communities to reach their destination.

Hathcock says meals are open to the public.

He says people need to qualify to receive need-based services, including rental-assistance.

Hathcock says about 45-percent of those who receive a meal are "new" faces to their program, that likely will not return again.

Macon Outreach will be closed on Friday, Christmas day and New Year's day.
