A Cochran man accused of murdering a baby is being held without bond.

Cochran police say a Bleckley County magistrate judge denied bond Wednesday morning for 22-year-old Qweon Grant.

He was arrested Tuesday.

The news release says early Tuesday morning, police received a call in reference to a baby who was not breathing at a home in Cochran. Emergency workers found a 15-month-old baby non-responsive.

Family members today identified the victim as Amircle Shaw, daughter of Shaquinda Shaw. They said Grant had been with the mother for about a year.

The baby was transported to the Bleckley Memorial Hospital where it was pronounced dead, according to the release.

"A little after 4, that's when they told us. They did everything they could, and it was no help," said Shaquinda Shaw's sister, Vernice Hill.

An autopsy found the baby died after being strangled, according to police.

"He sat there, in my grandmother's house all day, all night with us--knowing he did something, and acted like he didn't do it," said Hill, of Grant.

The release says after an investigation, Grant was arrested for murder.

He was placed in jail to await his bond hearing.

"We never thought anything about it until this happened," said Hill. "But you never know what goes through somebody's head until it's done."

Hill says for her sister Shaquinda and for the family, the loss is too great for words. It's a loss they never saw coming, she says, because Grant seemed to get along with Shaw's children.

"This child never did nothing to hurt you, never harmed you in any kind of way," says Hill. "But you killed a child and I want to know why. And I'm going to ask. Deep down in my heart I want to know why. What was the reason for this."
