A Michigan woman died in a Houston County hit and run accident Wednesday night.

Houston County Sheriff's Office Captain Robert West says a tractor-trailor driver under the influence of alcohol or drugs broadsided a vehicle in Perry, killing the passenger and leaving the driver hospitalized.

The accident happened around 5:45 pm on Sam Nunn Boulevard near the Interstate-75 off ramp.

The driver of the tractor trailer, Luis Lopez Guzman, Jr., 50, of Texas, ran a red light, struck a Ford pick up truck, and kept going.

Murray Hanes, 66, of Fenwick, Mich. suffered head injuries and was transported to Macon's Medical Center of Central Georgia. He's currently listed in stable condition.

His passenger, and wife, Janice Hanes, 65, also of Fenwick, Mich. was taken to Perry hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She suffered multiple traumatic injuries, West said.

Shortly after leaving the scene, Perry police stopped Guzman, who was driving south on I-75.  According to West, he was arrested and charged with DUI, vehicular homicide of the 1st degree, and leaving the scene of the accident. Guzman's currently in the Houston County Detention Center.

West says other charges may be filed.
