A Macon Republican has announced plans to run for the 8th District Congressional seat in 2010.

Diane Vann is the fifth GOP candidate to announce plans to challenge the Democratic incumbent Jim Marshall.

The 57-year-old registered nurse worked as a part-time nursing lab coordinator for Macon State College, and said she waited to declare her candidacy until after her contract with the college had expired.

She said she's concerned with excess spending and runaway government.

"[I want to] try to return to the trickle down economics that did work. I know that Obama said that it did not work, I totally disagree with him. I believe that trickle down economics of the capitalist system is the better way to go. It's better to have people that are unequally rich than people that are equally poor," she said.

Also running on the Republican side:

  • Paul Rish, a Macon businessman and former chairman of the county's Republican party.
  • Ken DeLoach of Warner Robins, a private-school assistant principal and part-time pastor.
  • Businesswoman Angela Hicks of Macon.
  • Valerie Meyers of Bonaire, a technical writer and business analyst for a Houston County company that services Robins Air Force Base and other bases.
