Bad puns, a general tolerance for each other and a love for music brought Tom Rule, Bobby Hall and Mark Williams together as friends.
A year ago, the guys decided to put all that love and tolerance together to form a band. Thus, the Mosely Dixon Project was born. Rule says they purposefully spelled the "Mosely" in "Mosely Dixon Project" different from the well-known "Moseley Dixon Road" in Macon. That was so folks from outside Central Georgia would know how to pronounce it correctly.
As for the music - the band favors a light jazz, bluesy sound. But they're not afraid to jump outside their genre. "We've done some Grateful Dead," states Rule. Williams throw out, "Allman Brothers!" "Bob Dylan," chimes in Hall. "So, we're slowly coalescing into our own sound, but we've got the talent level and experience level where we can cherry pick whatever we want."
They've got talent in spades. Rule and Hall are both classically trained. Rule has a Masters in Piano Performance and Hall is working on a degree in guitar at Mercer University. Williams is also a highly accomplished musician who has played for decades with various bands throughout the area. And all three gentlemen teach at Young America Music School in Macon.
"I think it's an inspirational group to be a part of," says Rule. "As a musician, you know, you're very grateful to be playing with such great musicians who inspire you to create and write."
And when asked what they want their growing audience to know about them, Hall replied, "We're not as old as we look!"
Williams offers advice for anyone who sees the band in action, "We're very serious about our music, but we're not going to go off the deep end if we totally mess up. We've got a lot of on-stage communication that happens, so that's sometimes fun to watch. You can see the raised eyebrow and know - whoops! They missed that note!"
