The Georgia College & State University women's basketball team (12-4, 5-1 PBC) picked-up its fifth-straight win tonight (Jan. 23) beating the University of Montevallo (10-7, 3-4 PBC) in a 63-59 nail-biter.
Down 59-56, junior Chimere Jordan (Gray, Ga.) snagged a defensive rebound for the Bobcats with two minutes and twenty-two seconds left to play. She took it coast-to-coast for the lay-up pulling Georgia College within one. On the other end of the court solid defense resulted in a Falcon turnover and a Bobcat timeout.
Behind 59-58 with a minute-thirty on the clock, Jordan was fouled while sinking a lay-up, setting up the opportunity for a three-point play. The made free throw put the 'Cats up 61-59, and the defense held Montevallo at 59 for the remaining 90 seconds to seal the win.
Jordan led the Bobcats tonight, scoring an impressive 24 points with five rebounds, her third 20-point game of the year. Senior forward Antoinette Reames (Orlando, Fla.) contributed 14 points and five boards.
Junior Dominique Huffin (Tucker, Ga.) helped with 12 points and five rebounds as well, while senior Candice Clark (Warner Robins, Ga.) put up nine points and senior Shandrea Moore (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) recorded a team-high of six boards.
For the Falcons, Alicia Lewis led the team with 12 points and six rebounds, while Shan Jones scored 11 points and tallied four boards. Tiaren Young put up 10 points and grabbed a team-high of seven rebounds for Montevallo.
B oth teams fought hard tonight in a contest that saw the score tied 10 times with 17 lead changes. Off the bench, each team scored 14 points, while the Falcons out-rebounded Georgia College 40-35. The Bobcats were better from the field, out-shooting the Falcons 42 percent to 37 percent.
Georgia College is back in action Monday, Jan. 25 traveling to St. Augustine, Fla. to take on Flagler College at 5:30 p.m.
