BLECKLEY COUNTY - Derrick Martin, a student at Bleckley County High School, has permission to attend this year's prom with his boyfriend.
Principal Michelle Masters says he approached her to seek permission to attend as part of a same-sex couple. She says historically, opposite sex-couples have gone to the prom, but there is no policy to prohibit same-sex couples from attending.
Masters says Martin did have to fill out a form listing his boyfriend as an official date, but that all Bleckley County High School students who wish to bring students from other schools must do so. She says Martin told her his boyfriend attends Tift County High School, where they went to the homecoming dance together.
The principal adds that she hasn't noticed the issue among students. She says when Martin approached her, he didn't express any reservations about backlash from the student body; he only wanted to make sure his and his boyfriend's attendance at the prom would be approved.
