Supporters rally around Dublin High School principal

Students, parents, and community members all want to know why the Dublin City High School principal won't be back next fall.

It was standing room only in the Monday night's school board meeting, with dozens of students finding a seat on the floor. They held up signs and wore t-shirts in supporting of Dublin City High School Principal Tyrone Kellogg.

Last month, the Dublin City School Board decided to not renew Kellogg's contract for next school year.

According to data presented by Kellogg in March, discipline problems at the school have been cut more than half in his tenure. During the 2014-2015 school year there were 1,227 discipline referrals, up to March the school had only 393 referrals.

With those numbers and increased graduation rates, parents like Shumida O'Neal are puzzled by the board's decision.

“It doesn't make sense to any of us,” O’Neal said. “We are still wanting the answers to why they would want a man of this magnitude to leave and risk our students and this high school that I'm an alumni of, to decline in all these measures that they've worked hard over the last two years to achieve.”

Demetrice Hollis is one of the seven board members. She says she's proud of the outpouring of students and parents in support of the Principal Kellogg. She said she couldn't discuss personnel but encourages students to keep standing up for what they believe in.

“I'm sure there's a way, but we will see how we get to that,” Hollis said. “I don't want to set an expectation, especially about staff that something would change on that. I don't want to get people's hopes up about it, but I think there's always a way to come at a different outcome. If the board decides to do something different, there's always a way.”

The board took no action on Kellogg and didn't mention him during the meeting.
