Swainsboro man arrested after a year on the run

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has arrested a Swainsboro man wanted for the murder of a woman and her husband last summer while on the run.

A news release says 41-year-old Tony Lanard Williams was found after the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that he was at Woodrum Place Apartments in Statesboro.

The sheriff’s office and GBI Southeastern Regional Drug Enforcement Office conducted surveillance of the apartment.

The release says they stopped a vehicle leaving the apartment being driven by 46-year-old Walford McKinney, of Vidalia, who told the deputies he swallowed an ‘unknown amount of cocaine.’ He later died at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center.

Once Williams was arrested at the apartment, the drug enforcement office executed a search warrant and found $4,900 worth of crack, cocaine and weed.

Williams was wanted for federal drug trafficking charges, as well as the murder of Angela Gillis and Kenneth Gillis while he was on the run.

He is currently in the Emanuel County Jail.
