Tennille man charged with robbery, murder

A Washington County man is charged with robbing and killing another man Wednesday night.

Sheriff Thomas Smith says Richard Walton, 38, of Tennille faces several charges, including malice murder.

He's accused of fatally shooting Brian Johnson, 35, also of Tennille.

Johnson's body was found around 5:30 Thursday morning by the side of Leyton Boyd Road.

That's a dirt road through woods in the Riddleville section of the county.

Smith says Johnson died from a single gunshot to the face.

The sheriff says several tips led them to Walton.

He says investigators believe a third person drove Walton and Johnson to the woods. That person has not been charged.

He also says Walton robbed Johnson, who was an acquaintance.

According to Smith, Walton is a convicted burglar. He is charged with malice murder, robbery, using a firearm

while committing a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Smith says Walton is in the Washington County jail and he may face other charges.

He was also wanted on a robbery warrant from Lowndes County.
