The Houston County Board of Commissioners made a unanimous vote to double the tire tipping fee for landfill customers, from $90 per ton to $180 per ton.
Chairman Tommy Stalnaker says the Board made the decision due to a recent increase to the rate the County pays to vendors for tire disposal.
Stalnaker says tires can't be disposed at the Houston County Landfill, and must be taken to a recycling facility. He says the closest facility is in Jackson, Georgia.
Stalnaker says it's been over 15 years since any fee at the landfill has increased.
"We're not looking to make money to any extent on the tires, but we cannot lose money and we were going to lose a significant amount of money if we had not made an adjustment on the tipping fee," Stalnaker says.
Stalnaker says the adjustment will help cover the county's actual cost for disposal and transportation to the facility in Jackson.
