Bibb County's Board of Elections is now in a larger building down the street from their current site. Election supervisor, Jeanetta Watson, says the building will allow for more people to count votes on election nights, which could lead to more efficient results.
“We have overflow at the other end so that we can service other voters,” says Watson. She says the Board of Elections was in need of a new building.
“We needed more space to house more voters,” says Watson. Watson says one of the changes of the new building that she is most excited about is this new waiting area. She says she will be able to utilize the area and better serve voters.
Thomas Gillon, the elections officer, gave 13WMAZ a tour of the new facility. Gillon showed us the room where they tabulate all of the votes on election days. Watson says by making this room larger, they should be able to get election results out more efficiently.
Gillon says there will be three to four booths opened daily, but there are five additional booths they can open for election days.
In the back of the building is where they keep all of the election voting machines. Gillon says they send six to twenty of these machines to go to each voting location, and all of this just in time for the presidential election.
“We expect it to just be really exciting as the reports come in locally and statewide with who is going to be our next president,” says Watson.
The new building is at 2525 Pio Nono Avenue, in the Westgate Shopping Center.
