UPDATE: Body found near south Macon park

Gunshot victim found dead behind rec center

(UPDATE 7:13 p.m.)

Around 11:55 a.m. Thursday morning, Macon-Bibb 911 received a call saying a body had been found in the woods behind the Bloomfield Recreation Center. When authorities investigated the scene, Leon Jones said they found a homicide scene.

According to Jones, "a gunshot wound" killed the victim.

The victim hasn't yet been identified, but a news release from the Bibb Sheriff's Office says it is a male who appeared to be in his late teens or early twenties.

It marks the 30th homicide this year in Macon-Bibb, a figure Jones says is remarkably high for central Georgia.

"If we ever need prayer, we need it now. This is 30. This is Macon, this ain't Cobb county, Fulton County, Dekalb. This is Macon, Georgia," said Jones.

Carlon Smith lives near the scene and says she thinks she heard gunshots Wednesday night.

"We heard like six gunshots last night. I thought it was firecrackers, but that was last night about 10 p.m." said Smith.

Smith says the recent violence has her scared for her family's safety.

"I'm constantly calling and checking on them. It's gotta get better in Macon," said Smith.

So far, it's unclear how long the body was in the woods before being found. Leon Jones said the wet weather and mud make it difficult to estimate a timeline. For now, the investigation is ongoing.

If you have any information about the shooting, you're asked to call the Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68-CRIME.
