VERIFY: Should drivers stop for bus on divided highway?

Some people are unclear on when exactly you have to stop for a bus. One viewer sent in a question for us to verify. Viewer Leslie Strozier drives to work from Macon to Warner Robins every day. She takes Highway 247 in Macon and wants to know if drivers on the opposite side of the highway need to stop for a school bus on a divided highway?

"Sometimes they stop, sometimes they don't," Christopher Weston said.

Christopher Weston and Joshua Nixon work at 247 Auto Sales. There's a bus stop right in front of the shop that Weston says sometimes other drivers don't notice.

"Most people don't take time to look around their surroundings," Nixon said. "They're always in a hurry and ready to go to get where they need to go."

So should drivers stop for a school bus on a divided highway?

Captain Brad Wolfe with the Bibb County Sheriff's Office says yes.

"If it's a 5-lane road with a center turn lane, you must stop in all directions," Wolfe said.

Wolfe says stopping on both sides helps keep the kids safe when getting on or off the bus.

"It's just because of the unpredictability of the children mainly," Wolfe said. "I mean, they could get off the bus and decide they want to go across the street or whatever, or some driver may not be paying attention at all. It's just a dangerous situation when you have small kids out there, so it's just best to stop everything."

He says the only exception is if there's a median or barrier dividing the highway.

"There has to be a physical separation from those 2 roadways to alleviate you from having to stop for the school bus," Wolfe said.

So we verified, if you're driving on a divided highway with only a center turn lane, you must stop for a school bus.

"Be more aware and take time to be aware of their surroundings," Nixon said.
