Toms, Shaheen win Warner Robins posts

Randy Toms is Warner Robins' new mayor, and current mayor Chuck Shaheen won a citywide council seat.

With all six precincts and more than 1,600 early votes counted:

Toms beat Joe Musselwhite by nearly 1,500 votes. Toms has 66 percent of the vote, Musselwhite 34 percent.

During his victory speech, Toms wiped his eyes and said, "We are going to do everything possible to make Warner Robins the best place to live work and raise a family, That's a promise," he said to a thunderous applause. Toms thank his supporters, particularly his wife.

"Without her blessing and support, I wouldn't have attempted this," he said.

He expects to be sworn in Jan. 1.

Musselwhite says he may have lost the race but, "I still love my city and I'm still going to support it.

"Life goes on for Joe Musselwhite," he added. "I'm at peace with this. I support the citizens' decision. I support Randy Toms.

When asked if he has any advice for the mayor-elect, Musselwhite said, "I wouldn't give him any advice. I'd never give anybody advice unless they asked me."

Shaheen won the citywide Post 1 race over incumbent Mike Daley. Shaheen had 59 percent of the vote and a 849-vote lead; Daley had 41 percent.

Shaheen is stepping down from the mayor's post after one term, saying he wanted to work in the private sector and that the council has more power than the mayor anyway.

"I'm excited for the City of Warner Robins," Shaheen told 13WMAZ's Jennifer Moulliet. "I couldn't have done it without my relationship with the lord ... my wife Virginia. The city is going to see a whole different type of government. We're going to move the city forward."

About 14.5 percent of Warner Robins voters turned out to cast ballots, counting early voters.

Elections supervisor Kathy Cummings told 13WMAZ's Lorra Lynch Jones that just 20 percent of registered voters came to the polls on Nov. 6, and Tuesday's turnout was even lower.
