Dump truck overturns, catches on fire on Bass Road

MACON - Traffic on Bass Road was blocked after a dump truck ran off the road.

According to Sgt. Linda Howard with the Bibb Sheriff's Office it happened near the intersection of Westchester Drive and Bass Road.

Crews blocked the 1300 block of Bass Road as they worked to clean gas that was leaking from the truck.

Witness Adam Bertram says he was mowing his lawn just feet away from where the dump truck ran off the road. He says a UPS truck stopped to turn on Bass Road and that's when the dump truck ran off the road. Bertram says, "It hit the tree...the driver's side fuel tank exploded."

Once the truck went into flames, Bertram said he and the UPS driver sprung into action. Both men pulled the driver out of the dump truck. Firefighters on the scene were able to put the fire out.

The driver of the dump truck has not been identified. No word on his condition.
