The Knight Foundation has awarded Mercer University a $250,000 grant to help downtown development.

City and Mercer officials announced the grant at a Friday-afternoon news conference.

Mercer officials say they'll use the grant to fund start-up costs for designing a master plan for the College Hill corridor.

Mercer University and the City of Macon have worked together for the past year on the project.

The corridor is aimed at creating a pedestrian and bike-friendly path between the campus and downtown macon.

Mayor Robert Reichert says the project will help intown Macon grow. "It will make it more pedestrian friendly, greener, more comfortable, more convenient, and more attractive as a place to live and to work and to play," he said.
