Shaheen defeats Daley for Post 1 Council Seat

It was a night of runoffs for the city of Warner Robins. The next mayor and Post 1 council seat were up for grabs.

Current Mayor Chuck Shaheen defeated incumbent Mike Daley and will represent the Post 1 seat.

The rain didn't stop these supporters from campaigning for their candidates, but it may have kept some voters from the polls. Only around fifteen percent of registered voters cast their ballots Tuesday in the city's runoff election.

But current Mayor Chuck Shaheen came away with 58.9% of the votes.

"I appreciate the citizens that voted. I really had been prayerful about being re-elected and I just prayed and thanked the Lord for giving me the opportunity to serve four more years," says Shaheen.

He discusses the low voter turnout. "You can look at it two ways. I want to be thankful for those fifteen percent, how important it is to have the right people in our city government."

He says since he's been mayor, he's tried to get more people into the polls to vote.

"Obviously, you'd want more people out voting," says Shaheen.

He says he's looking forward to working with new mayor-elect Randy Toms.

"I think that it's important to work together as a team. If we have some things that we need to work out, let's do it before a council meeting. It's going to be a much better city government. I think it's going to be very fluent, but more importantly, we're going to get some projects done," says Shaheen.

He says, "The future is going to be very bright for the city of Warner Robins, and I'm excited to get some of these projects we've started from the 2012 SPLOST, get them going."

Shaheen still has a few weeks as mayor of Warner Robins. He served one term in that office.

He previously told 13WMAZ when he decided not to seek re-election, that he wanted to get back into the private workforce.

Shaheen will be sworn in as councilman of Post 1 on January 6th.
