Powerball jackpot jumps to $700 million

ATLANTA - Due to heavy sales, lottery officials announced Tuesday morning that the estimated jackpot for Wednesday night's Powerball jackpot had been raised from $650 million to an estimated $700 million.

This makes Wednesday night's drawing the second richest lottery drawing in history. The largest lottery jackpot of all time was the mammoth $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot drawn in January 2016 and split between winners in California, Florida and Tennessee.

The Powerball jackpot began rolling on June 14 and has rolled over 20 times.

There are two jackpot options for payment: the $700 million jackpot prize paid out over 29 years in 30 graduated payments or the cash option of about $443 million.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are about 1 in 292 million. In comparison, the odds of dating a supermodel are about 1 in 88,000, the odds of being attacked by a shark are 1 in 11.5 million and the odds of being struck by lightning are 1 in 96,000.

Powerball tickets are $2 per play. Powerball is played in 44 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
